How often should I shoot my handicap?

Not all that often, according to GolfingFocus.com"Golfers should hit their handicap or better 25% of the time and will on average score 3 strokes higher than their handicap according to research by the USGA handicap research team."

According to another source, it's 20-25%. Out of curiosity, I analyzed my own golf scores as well as those of one other member of SGL since March 1, 2023. Here are the results:

  • Player 1 - hit handicap exactly 25% of the time, and averaged 3 strokes higher
  • Me - 15.6%, 4 strokes

I was disappointed when my scores did not align with the GolfFocus results. I felt some relief to know that If I had shot just one stroke less in three rounds, I could have achieved 20%. Still on the lower end. This source suggests that if you're unable to surpass your handicap once every five games, it's likely to increase. Conversely, if you're exceeding your handicap more than once every five games, it's likely to decrease.
