Peer Review

11/01/2023

I searched "peer review" on Google Images and was asked if I meant "beer review." No, but this will do.

Last but not least. This is the final post of a how-to series starting in March in which I've tried to cover the fundamentals of handicapping. I'll title it, "A Sandbagger's Guide to Handicapping." For a deeper look into the rules, please click here.

Peer comes from the Latin term "par," meaning equal. When you are on par with someone, you are their peer.

Write this down somewhere - there is no "t" between the ees in "peer review," that would make it "peter review." Some may think it's solely my or Linda's responsibility to review each club member's score file. Well, we do that; annually, randomly, and on demand. However, all members need to participate in peer review.

Sending out monthly reports of dates and scores helps you participate in peer review. Sharing your scores with other members may seem (much) too personal to some, but the Oregon Golf Assoc. (OGA) strongly encourages publishing this report as the first step in peer review.

As an SGL member, it's essential to understand your responsibility regarding peers posting scores. You should make sure that your fellow members are accurately submitting their scores. If you notice that a member is not submitting scores or submitting incorrect ones, it's crucial to inform the handicap committee.

Understandably, you may feel uncomfortable narcing on someone who plays in the same group or league as you. Once I received an anonymous note clipped to the scorecard holder on my golf cart. You need not go to such extremes. Please know your identity will be hidden. No matter how we receive your information, the committee can take the necessary steps to ensure the golfer has an index accurately reflecting their playing ability. Your participation in peer review is your responsibility and good for the game.

Do you need to edit a posted score on GHIN?

Instead of contacting the OGA, please contact Linda or me and we will make the change for you.
