Index Calculator

Calculators change and so do golf seasons.

(Sharp EL-8, 1970)

Starting from December 1, all golf courses in Oregon will be deemed inactive. You won't be required to post your scores for the next three months if you are playing on an Oregon course. You don't have to remember this because the GHIN app automatically prevents you from posting Oregon course scores. Click here to view the Handicap Active and Inactive Season Schedule.

If you are a snowbird and have designated Salishan GL as your home course, there are certain things you need to keep in mind. When you migrate to a year-round active state like California or Arizona, it is important to post your scores and indicate each round as an "A" (Away) round. If you have any questions and a couple of spare bedrooms, Linda and I and our spouses will be happy to visit and stay with you for as long as it takes to answer your questions. We do not have any dietary restrictions and we prefer to start Happy Hour promptly at 4:30 PM.

Move along. Nothing to see here, perhaps. If you're not interested in calculating your index or you already have the capability, skip ahead to the reports.

Golfing on Salishan's rain-soaked, ball-plugging, no-roll "unfairways" can have a significant impact on your score. If you are interested in finding out what your index would be if GHIN were calculating your Oregon scores, you don't have to be a rocket scientist. All you need is a spreadsheet with pre-loaded formulas.

I have come across many online calculators, but I have been using the same one for the past six seasons. However, while working on this blog post, I stumbled upon a more user-friendly version. I have had it on my hard drive for a few weeks and have confirmed that it is virus-free. Therefore, I highly recommend using this calculator. See instructions below.

March 08 2024 UPDATE - I have found a very friendly calculator since I posted in December. I highly recommend it. You can access it here

====================

This tutorial video shows you how to download and customize the calculator. It will guide you through the entire process step-by-step. If you are facing any issues with the audio, you can click on the white 'YouTube' text located at the bottom of the video screen. This will redirect you to the video on YouTube, where you can watch it directly. In case the video quality is not up to the mark, you can click on the gear icon to adjust the quality..

Before downloading the file from Reddit, please read the post. Once you have downloaded it and converted it to Excel or Google Sheets, you must enter your last twenty rounds to personalize it, duh. You can find the required information, such as dates, scores, ratings, and slopes, on your GHIN app. Simply open the app and click on the "Stats" tab. Having trouble? I can swing by at dinnertime and help you.

Nerd stuff! When you're adding your latest round in row 3, make sure to select only the range A3:E21. This is explained in the video. Please do not include any data in columns F or G. Even though column G might be blank, its value of nothing is used in the formulas.

This month's winner of a sleeve of TaylorMade golf balls is Chris Bothman. Please track down golf pro Andrew Grove to claim your prize.

"Play and Post on the Same Day" contest

During this season, about a quarter of the 179 members of Salishan GL consistently posted their rounds on the same day they played. These members were eligible for a $50 gift certificate for the Salishan GL pro shop as a reward. Linda and I used an online number wheel to select the winner. Linda spun the wheel, and it landed on 24, her number! We quickly agreed she should spin again, and it landed on 17. Congratulations to Curtis Landers.

Come on down to the Salishan Golf Links' pro shop and track down our golf pro Andrew Grove for your prize.
